Severin Films Super Shock Pop-Up Film Festival 2024

 

Recently, I had the opportunity to appear on Without Your Head to discuss the Super Shock Pop-Up Film Festival.

On August 24th, Severin Films, the “primo purveyors of cinematic horror, trash & sleaze” (Dark Side), presented their annual Super Shock Pop-Up Film Festival Triple Feature. Attendees were treated to a mystery big-screen triple-feature of unreleased titles coming exclusively to Severin Blu-ray/UHD in the coming year!Aside from unleashing a highly-anticipated cinematic inferno, this very special one-night-only event included special trailer reveals, free swag, and the ultimate Severin merch table.

Says Severin President David Gregory: “Super-Shock is part fan appreciation event, part future-titles reveal, and 100% Severin Films gala celebration. This year promises to be our biggest and best yet.”

Films Shown

  • The Mask of Satan (Demons 5: The Devil’s Veil)
    Directed by Lamberto Bava, this film involves a group of skiers who discover a cursed witch’s mask. The Spanish-dubbed version of the film was shown, adding an interesting twist to the screening.
    Supervixens (1975)
    A classic by Russ Meyer, Supervixens was the audience’s choice for the second feature of the night. Known for its over-the-top eroticism and outrageous scenes, the film was met with excitement and a strong response from the largely male audience.

  • Delicatessen (1991)
    Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, this French film is a dark comedy set in a post-apocalyptic world. Although a well-known title, the 4K restoration brought a fresh experience to viewers.

Audience Voting Experience

Before the second film, the audience had a chance to vote on the next screening. Severin presented four trailers for upcoming releases:

  1. Rats: Night of Terror (directed by Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso)
  2. Poppers (also known as Hunting)
  3. The Dracula Saga (directed by León Klimovsky)
  4. Supervixens (directed by Russ Meyer)

Fans enthusiastically voted, and Supervixens seemed to win by a significant margin, showcasing the crowd’s enthusiasm for Russ Meyer’s distinctive style.

    Directed by Bruno Mattei, this zombie horror film thrilled the audience.

Special Guest: Brad Carter on Film Novelization

One of the highlights of the evening was a Q&A session with novelist Brad Carter, who has been collaborating with Severin on several film novelizations. Brad provided fascinating insights into the creative processes involved in turning films into novels, sharing how he sometimes takes liberties with source material to expand storylines and add depth.

Brad also discussed his upcoming novelization of Hell of the Living Dead, describing it as his magnum opus. Fans appreciated his candidness and humor, gaining a newfound respect for the art of novelization.
