The main reason that it is significant is that, allegedly, advance copies were not made available for review. It seems that the review came out in the March issue of Maxim. The Crowes were puzzled as they had not provided review copies (and presumably the album hadn’t leaked?). So, the manager called up the magazine and according to AP:
The band’s manager, Pete Angelus, said the magazine explained that its review was an “educated guess.”
Maxim released this statement in response: “Maxim will continue to provide our readers with information that is important to them, whether it is about fashion, lifestyle, technology, music, movies and more.”
I don’t think I have to take any time to explain the problem with “educated guess” record reviews.
After some scouting, I found that Ryan’s Smashing Life has a scan of the published review.
